SOUTHERN TENANT FOLK UNION & GRASSFIRE
Bournemouth Folk Club ~ Thursday 9th October 2008

After a brief welcome, Bournemouth Folk Club host Paul Burke, introduced local four piece bluegrass band 'Grassfire' to the stage.

Performing six tracks, including 'Greenville Tressel' and introducing harmonies in classic tune 'Fox On The Run', Grassfire opened the evening with a natural, folky-bluegrass mix of melody & song.
Using Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle & vocals to create their unique sound, Grassfire set the musical scene, paving the way for popular London based band 'Southern Tenant Folk Union'.

Southern Tenant Folk Union assembled on the stage, fresh & confident, & without delay, band leader, Pat McGarvey counted

the band into their first track, 'Her Love's Gone Cold,' from their current album 'Revivals, Rituals & Union Songs'.

Encompassing favourites, including 'Sweeter Times' & 'Rosalind'  from their first album, the band created drifting harmonic melodies & perfectly synchapated rhythms.

Displaying beautifully rich harmonies & varying vocal tones, Pete Gow took the lead vocal & moved the audience with a sincere performance of 'No More Hard Times (No More Trouble)'.

With a dramatic edge & melancholy tone, the band thrilled the audience with 'Cocaine'. The melancholy tone, beautifully laced with raw harmonies, was made complete by Roddy Neilson & his sonorious fiddle narrating the musical storyline, drawing each listener deeper into the deliciously layered melodies.

With a unique approach & an enigmatic spectrum of sound, the band continued as they had started, providing a communicative, lively & compelling first half.

After a short interval, Southern tenant Folk Union returned to the stage to perform more invigorating, toe tapping melodies.
With  music running through each musician, leeching out into their seemingly enchanted instruments, the band created musicial frenzies of rhythm & song.

Introducing a washboard to their repertoire to accompany the stunning sounds of guitar, banjo, fiddle & double bass, the band performed 'Tell Me What You Want', from their upcoming album, which will definitely be one to look out for!

During a fantastic performance of 'The First & Last', where Pat McGarvey showed off his vocal range, Double Bass player Matt Lloyd & guitarist Pete Gow, used their instruments as would be drums, to provide an exciting rhythmic accompaniment.

Beautifully soft vocal harmonies were expressed during 'Can You Light A Flame' & 'Cold Flagstone', to accompany the stunning lead vocals of Oliver Talkes, as the band were completely unified in the purity of their song.

During the evening to a close, Southern Tenant Folk Union performed 'Here In The Dock', which was followed by a heartfelt applause as the audience called for an encore.
The band collected in the low light infront of the stage for a totally acoustic, unique & intimate performance, which was followed by a prolonged applause from a truly thrilled audience.

An incredible evening of fantastic, fresh music, presented in an inviting, modern & sincerely trendy package...
